At the 2012 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race in France, Audi
unveiled the SQ5 TDI performance diesel SUV model that was the first
performance diesel SUV that the company offered for the Q5 model range.
The diesel engine was chosen to celebrate the accomplishments and
success that the Audi Racing Team has had at the 24 Hours of Le Mans
with their diesel-powered race cars. Although the new performance model
was given a warm reception, many parts of the world could not have it
due to the fact that it was a diesel model. After a few months of market
research, Audi decided to push ahead with plans for the SQ5 - a
gasoline-powered performance SUV that could be sold in a number of new
markets. The new Audi SQ5 features a supercharged engine with over 350
horsepower, a new chassis, exclusive styling, and concave truck wheels
for an added aesthetic benefit.
Under the aluminum hood of the new Audi SQ5 is a supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 TFSI engine that is both powerful and efficient. The 3.0 TFSI engine features a crankshaft-driven supercharger positioned atop the engine between each cylinder bank that spins at speeds up to 20,000 RPM and provides a maximum of 1.2 BAR of boost pressure to each cylinder. All of the standard efficiency technologies such as start/stop systems and thermal management are also used to ensure the best fuel and emissions standards. The performance engine can send 354 horsepower from 6,000 to 6,500 RPM and 470 Nm of torque from 4,000 to 4,500 RPM to all four of the concave truck wheels.
Just like other Audi performance models, the SQ5 will feature a Quattro all-wheel drivetrain with center differential and Tiptronic eight-speed transmission. The Quattro all-wheel drive system will also utilize advanced torque vectoring that brakes the front or rear concave truck wheels slightly in the middle of turns to improve handling dynamics.
In terms of the chassis, Audi has given the SQ5 SUV a new suspension, brakes, and wheels. The suspension features aluminum double-wishbones at the front axle that are lighter than the standard units and sits 20 mm lower for a better center of gravity. The brakes were increased in size up to 320 mm discs with six-piston calipers up front for better stopping power. New concave truck wheels help create a more muscular stance and measure 20 inches in diameter with 255/45 performance tires for better grip.
The exterior looks visually more aggressive thanks to new exclusive styling bits. The front and rear each wear a new bumper that improve cooling, downforce, and drag properties. New badges are worn on each of the fenders while new brushed aluminum mirrors, and chrome window surrounds. A new rear spoiler helps to generate extra downforce at high speeds and is unique to the Audi SQ5 model.
The new Audi SQ5 will be available worldwide including the North American markets in 2013.
